The Denver Opportunity Youth Initiative works to expand employment and education pathways and opportunities to Denver and Aurora Opportunity Youth – nearly 13,000 ages 16-24 are not in school and not working. Together, we’re creating the belonging, meaning, wellbeing, and purpose conditions where all youth thrive.

Overview

Colorado Youth for a Change proudly took the lead as the backbone organization of the Denver Opportunity Youth Initiative in 2022, convening the following sectors to achieve better educational and employment outcomes alongside young people 16-24: nonprofit, government, business, K-12 and higher education institutions.

Priorities include the following:

  • Build stronger transitions, transparency, and referrals for youth across programs, schools, and employment in Denver and Aurora
  • Increase Belonging, Meaning, Wellbeing, and Purpose (BMWP) across the full life cycle of working with and/or hiring young people
  • Increase the number of youth who are reengaging in high school and/or GED and who are transitioning into post-secondary and employment
  • Advocate for and with Opportunity Youth within other community coalitions and groups to ensure opportunities exist for all
  • Ensure that real experiences and feedback from young people are incorporated into decision making, policies, and program implementation

In 2024, we received multi-year funding as part of the Scaling Youth Outcomes Cohort. Together, we’re using data and best practices to help more young people reach milestones like high school graduation, post-secondary enrollment and completion, and successful transitions into the workforce.

The Data

The Opportunity Youth Forum Common Measures are a set of four metrics to assess the overall opportunity youth disconnection rate, and the disconnection rates for high school, post-secondary and workforce annually at the population level using the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. The Common Measures provide a unique annual look into our community’s opportunity youth data and help to track progress and inform strategies.
